Weaving the Scattered: Exploring Bricolage and Poetic Expression in iPhone Filmmaking
Weaving the Scattered is a journey into the world of bricolage and poetic filmmaking, shaped through my MFA research and artistic exploration. This project reflects my deep engagement with a unique filmmaking technique, one that has evolved alongside my creative practice.
At the heart of my work lies a fascination with imperfection. My visual storytelling moves beyond individual identities, embracing a shared human experience shaped by travel, culture, and personal encounters. I seek beauty in fragments and unfinished moments, finding meaning in the passage of time and the traces it leaves behind.
My artistic practice spans various mediums—painting, textile art, theatre, narrative cinema, and conceptual photography. I draw inspiration from artists, writers, philosophers, and filmmakers who have explored imperfection in their own ways. By studying their methods and philosophies, I aim to create a cinematic experience that resonates with audiences on a deeper, more emotional level.
Non-linear storytelling is central to my filmmaking approach. By breaking away from traditional structures, I embrace a fluid, unpredictable rhythm that mirrors the organic nature of memory and emotion. Chance aesthetics also play a key role in my work—embracing the unexpected, allowing accidents and raw moments to shape the final piece. The handheld nature of my filming process, the shifting light, and the unplanned details all add to the authenticity and spontaneity of the visual narrative.
Another important influence is the poetic documentary style, which blends reality with a more expressive, dreamlike approach. This method allows me to craft a visual language that is both grounded and abstract, offering audiences a reflective and immersive experience.
My current project, All Among Us, is a web-based poetic documentary capturing the human experience over a single day. Filmed over four years across Pakistan, Canada, Afghanistan, Turkey, China, and Azerbaijan, it weaves together fleeting moments from different cultures, forming a quiet meditation on time, emotion, and daily life. Arranged in a chronological flow from morning to night, the film offers a visual and sensory journey through shared human experiences.
By bringing together these fragments of life, All Among Us invites viewers to see beauty in imperfection, to find meaning in the everyday, and to reflect on the invisible threads that connect us all.
